NOHH Ltd draws on decades of occupational hygiene experience to deliver workplace air quality assessments across diverse workplace environments. Also known as Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) or Sick Building Syndrome, this page outlines the regulatory framework, assessment methodology and how to get in touch with our experts.

What is Workplace Air Quality?

Workplace air quality, often referred to as Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), relates to the condition of air within occupied buildings and its impact on employee health and comfort.

Concerns may include symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, respiratory irritation, or general environmental discomfort. These issues are often linked to ventilation performance, occupancy levels, building design, or internal sources of airborne contaminants.

Regulatory Context

Workplace air quality is governed primarily under Regulation 6 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which requires employers to ensure effective and suitable ventilation in enclosed workplaces. More broadly, duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 apply where environmental conditions may affect employee health and welfare.

Where indoor air quality concerns involve hazardous substances, such as cleaning chemicals, solvents, dusts or biological agents, obligations under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations may also apply. Assessments may additionally consider recognised ventilation standards and relevant HSE guidance to ensure proportionate and defensible compliance.

How NOHH Ltd Assesses Workplace Air Quality

NOHH Ltd undertakes structured investigations tailored to the building type and reported concerns. Assessments typically begin with a review of ventilation systems, occupancy patterns, and site conditions. Where appropriate, environmental monitoring is carried out using calibrated instrumentation. Findings are interpreted by experienced occupational hygiene professionals and presented in clear, defensible reports.

What We Measure

Depending on site requirements, assessments may include:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂)

  • Temperature and relative humidity

  • Air movement and ventilation performance

  • Airborne particulates

  • Carbon monoxide (CO)

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Monitoring scope is determined during initial consultation to ensure proportionate assessment.
