EXPOSURE MONITORING
Welding Fume & Metal Dust Monitoring
Welding fume and metal dust exposure can arise across a wide range of fabrication, engineering and manufacturing environments.
We support organisations with welding fume and metal particulate monitoring through workplace air sampling, carried out by BOHS qualified occupational hygienists.
Covering the entire UK, our exposure assessments help duty holders understand employee exposure, evaluate existing control measures and support ongoing compliance requirements.

ENVIRONMENTS
Welding and metal fabrication operations
We assess exposure across a range of industrial and technical environments, particularly where thermal processes, abrasive finishing and metalworking activities are routinely undertaken.
MIG & MAG Welding
TIG Welding
Common welding process associated with ozone and metal fume exposure.
Metal Fabrication
General fabrication activities involving welding, grinding and cutting.
Polishing & Abrasion
Abrasive preparation activities generating airborne metal particulates.
Grinding & Finishing
Grinding and finishing operations associated with respirable and inhalable metal dust.
Plasma Cutting
Thermal metal cutting process capable of generating metal fume.
Robotic Welding
Automated welding process associated with continuous metal fume generation.
Stick & MMA Welding
Manual arc welding process generating elevated levels of metal fume.
Maintenance & Repair
Intermittent fabrication activities often involving varied welding and grinding.
ANALYTES & CONTAMINANTS
Common airborne metal contaminants
We can assess a wide range of metal contaminants. Where exposure profiles are unclear, our qualified occupational hygienists can provide guidance or undertake a preliminary site assessment to help determine process risks.
PROCESS
Simple and efficient assessment process
We provide structured workplace exposure monitoring with minimal operational disruption, from initial discussion and on-site assessment through to laboratory analysis and detailed reporting.
1.
Initial Discussion & Preliminary Assessment
We discuss operational activities, materials, existing controls and any known or suspected exposure concerns in order to determine an appropriate monitoring strategy.
2.
Workplace Exposure Monitoring
Personal and/or static air sampling is undertaken under representative working conditions to assess employee exposure during normal operational activities.
3.
Laboratory Analysis & Assessment
Samples are analysed either in-house or by accredited laboratories and assessed against relevant Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) and applicable occupational hygiene guidance.
4.
Reporting & Recommendations
A full report is provided outlining exposure findings, monitoring methodology and practical recommendations where further control or reassessment may be required.
