• EXPOSURE MONITORING

Fish Protein & Allergen Monitoring

Fish protein exposure can arise across fish and seafood processing environments where handling, cutting, processing and cleaning activities can generate airborne proteinaceous material.

We support organisations with a wide range of specialist fish protein monitoring services through atmospheric sampling, carried out by experienced BOHS-qualified occupational hygienists.

Covering the entire UK, our assessments help duty holders understand employee exposure to airborne fish protein, evaluate the effectiveness of existing control measures and support compliance with COSHH requirements.

  • ACTIVITIES

Assessing exposure across fish processing activities

Airborne fish protein exposure can vary considerably across a site, presenting different potential for airborne fish protein generation.

Lugging & Handling

Handling, lugging, de-heading, de-gilling, gutting and evisceration of fish during primary processing.

Filleting, Skinning & Trimming

Manual and automated filleting, skinning, trimming, pin-boning and other preparation of fish products.

Cutting & Portioning

Manual, mechanical and water-jet cutting, portioning, mincing and other size-reduction processes.

Shellfish Processing

De-shelling, peeling, picking and preparation of crab, scampi, prawns, lobster and other crustaceans and shellfish species.

High-Pressure Processes

Compressed-air blowing, water jets and other high-energy processes capable of generating proteinaceous bioaerosols.

Washdown & Cleaning

Cleaning of equipment and production areas, particularly where hoses, sprays or pressure washing can aerosolise protein.

  • SPECIES WE MONITOR

Analysing airborne fish & seafood proteins

Fish protein can contribute to occupational asthma and respiratory sensitisation through the generation of airborne bioaerosols. Monitoring can be tailored to the process, using species-specific allergen assays or broader total-protein analysis.

  • PROCESS

Simple and efficient assessment process

We provide fish protein and allergen exposure assessments with minimal operational disruption, from initial review and workplace monitoring through to reporting and practical exposure control recommendations.

1.

Initial Discussion & Preliminary Assessment

We discuss workplace activities, materials, existing controls and any known or suspected exposure concerns to determine an appropriate monitoring strategy.

2.

Workplace Fish Protein Monitoring

Personal and/or static air sampling is undertaken under representative working conditions to assess employee exposure during normal operational activities.

3.

Laboratory Analysis & Assessment

Samples are analysed either in-house or by accredited laboratories and assessed against existing control measures, available research literature and applicable occupational hygiene guidance.

4.

Reporting & Recommendations

A full report is provided outlining exposure findings, monitoring methodology and practical recommendations where further control or reassessment may be required.
